Bauang, La Union: Food Stories

This is but a very small part of a series of posts about my family’s trip to La Union in January 2012. I simply have to share some of the food we ate – it was a food-cation. We did nothing but eat, eat, eat. We were actually treated as visitors there.

The moment we got there we went straight to what was supposedly a “small lunch” in the house my uncle’s mother-in-law (let’s call her “Manang“) in the province. It turned out to be a wedding reception. So yes, we kinda crashed that one. Well. I never crashed a wedding reception before.

Another person who welcomed us was the mayor of Bauang, La Union himself. No, we don’t know him personally. My cousin Joie – who is practically an uber-friendly megaphone – met him in Portland, where she lives. So she made a courtesy visit upon arriving at LU, and he was kind enough to send us this: Lechon for dinner.

That would be Manang chopping it for us.

We even setup this table beside the bar so we could have dinner under the stars, overlooking the sea.

Yummeh.

Moving on to number two: Mang Inasal. Cousin hasn’t been in the Philippines for 5 years and has never heard of the likes of Mang Inasal or Chicboy. Sometimes we don’t notice that things change.

And lastly, this is what I really wanted to share. One of our nights there, we were again invited by Manang for dinner in their humble abode. Tinola, she said, using native chicken. Being a lover of chicken, being a lover of Tinola, this really got me pretty excited. Looks like normal province food, right?

But what’s that, head? And tummy parts?

Is that a chicken’s foot right there?

Erm, I’m pretty adventurous when it comes to food, but this wasn’t really quite what I expected. Teehee. Raise your chicken foot if you’re up for it!

Oh, and one more thing… Mayor invited us to his house for breakfast on our very last day in LU. It looks like he really invites people there lot on Sundays as they have a sort of “breakfast buffet”. Pretty cool of him.

So, here’s to more foodventures outside the city!

So, what do you think?
